Description
Look closely. Do you see the two little ants, one on each mushroom? They are nibbling away at the caps and hauling the harvested bits off to their home. I came across them on a walk in Fontenelle Forest, a nature preserve in Bellevue, Nebraska, on the western bank of the Missouri River. The forest floor, covered with decaying leaves and bits of rotting wood, provides the perfect environment for fungi. In fact, I was so taken with this scene that I went back to the same spot the next day for more photos. By then the word had gotten out, there many more insects working away, and big hunks missing from the edge. I do have a color photo of that, too; do a search on "symbiosis" to find it.
