Description
When I'm walking in a forest, my eyes are naturally drawn upward: birds call and flit from tree to tree and a breeze rustles through the overhead canopy. But I also stop often and look down. There, on the forest floor, I find nature's still lifes. In this one dried leaves and the large branch of an oak tree lie on the ground. A cluster of false turkey tail fungus (Stereum Ostrea) growing on the hardwood limb adds interest to the little scene. This wooded area is in Fontenelle Forest, a nature center in Bellevue, Nebraska. The forest and its companion, Neale Woods, are a National Natural Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.
