Description
Tiny ants are busy harvesting these two gilled mushrooms growing on a rotting tree branch that was lying on the ground. I photographed these in Fontenelle Forest, a nature preserve in Bellevue, Nebraska. I spotted the fungi one day when I was out for a walk and took a picture. I wasn't close enough to see the ants. When I got home and viewed the photos on my computer, I was disappointed by the lack of focus on the mushrooms. However, I WAS able to see the ants and I was delighted by the light and bokeh in the background, so I determined to return the next day and try again. By then, the ants had eaten the edges, exposing the gills, and were already making great headway into the caps themselves. The stems (stipes) were untouched; smart guys these insects - they obviously need some way to get to the top.

humans do not recognize any others as being intelligent, especially while killing others to extinction..... just my thoughts.
