Description
This beautiful cluster of turkey tail fungus had grown on a cut off tree stump in the woods at Fontenelle Forest Nature Preserve in Eastern Nebraska. One of nature's decomposers, Trametes versicolor (Coriolus versicolor, Polyporus versicolor) almost always fruits on dead wood. I find the concentric rings and overlapping circles of this large rosette very beautiful, and I love the contrast between the leathery surface of its caps and the wrinkled, fallen leaves lying on the ground around it.
