Description
The underside of a mushroom is at least as interesting as its top. Here I photographed the back or bottom of the cap (pileus) and stem (stipe) of a bolete mushroom. As you can see, the surface is covered with many openings or pockets which hold the spores or seeds of the fungus. As a group, the Boletaceae are characterizec by having pockets rather than gills on the hymenial surface. This particular specimen was a yellowish gold and the top was more orange. Most mushrooms in this group are edible, though I elected not to try it.

Gosh, the detail is amazing, Nikolyn

Isn't it cool, Harriet? I started out going for a sort of natural abstract to capitalize on the patterns of the openings and the radiating lines where the stem meets the cap, but I found the whole so interesting, I ended up shooting this. Thanks for the comment, Harriet.
